In 2012 when a 0.042 ha (ouvrée) parcel of Montrachet sold for more than a million Euros to Billionaire François Pinault, it brought the value of one hectare up to 23 million Euros.
With just slightly under 8 hectares of surface area, the Montrachet vineyard is one of the most expensive in the world.
Located between the communes of Puligny (4.01ha) and Chassagne (3.99), both that have annexed the famous name to their own, this is ground zero for the best chardonnay in the world. Nearly perfect conditions to grow ripe, well-balanced grapes that will produce some of the longest-lived white wines.
Traditionally the plots located on the Chassagne side are called “Le Montrachet” and the vines are planted running north to south, while the Puligny side are called “Montrachet” and vines are planted in rows running east to west.
“Mont Rachet” gives it name to its neighboring four Grand Crus, Chevalier-Montrachet, Bâtard-Montrachet, Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet and Criots-Bâtard-Montrachet. Not every “Grand cru” in Burgundy is Grand, the chances of getting a truly delicious bottle is often a 50% chance. The chances with Montrachet I find are usually much higher. The styles can certainly vary by producer and négociant, but what you can rely on is depth of flavor, complexity and power.
There are several principal proprietors that make the most famous examples (Domaine de la Romanée Conti, Ramonet, Marquis de Laguiche (Drouhin), Bouchard Père et Fils, Guy Amiot-Bonfils). This map displays their holdings by parcel. Click on the vineyard for a description of the size, commune and orientation of the vines.
