The borders of the wine region of Ribera del Duero are within four Spanish provinces, Valladolid, Burgos, Segovia and Soria. It is named after the river that flows west through it, the great Duero. This fairly new wine region was historically not well known for quality wines. Monasteries had planted grapes since the middle ages, but modern wines date back only to the late 1800’s.
Today, one the world’s most famous winery, Vega-Siclia makes 3 iconic wines in the western unofficial area called the “Milla de Oro” or “Golden Mile”. Único, Valbuena No.5 and Alión. They’re not alone in prestige, many other wineries have achieving world-class fame here.
Tenzing has distributed wines from Torre de Golbán, Bodegas Briego, Dominio de Atauta, C.V.N.E and Bodegas Vega-Sicila for many years.
The main grape is Tempranillo, locally called “Tinto Fino”, which is much darker and structured than in Rioja. Some wines are blended with Bordeaux grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, then aged in new French barriques.
This map shows the topography and main towns along the river’s banks.
